Advice
Since November last
year I've been contributing a weekly Agony Uncle column to the
uk.gay.com website.
I'm a journalist, I'm a
psychotherapist, add the two together, you get agony uncle, eh? Makes
sense.
Well yeah, except journalists
are there to entertain readers, not help people (as if!)
And psychotherapists don't
actually give advice, knowing that everyone's story is infinitely more
complex than it may appear on the surface.
So half the time, reading these
columns back I've felt I'm being heartlessly rude to people in pain for
the sake of a snappy sentence...
...and the other half of the
time I feel that I'm getting the wrong end of a whole tree of sticks.
However the people who don't
write in saying "I don't know which is more laughable, your dispensing
advice on life like you know it, or gay.com allowing you to" (thank
you, audenfan2004)...
...sometimes write back and say
"thank you".
Which makes it all worth while.
See what you think.
